This guided reading club is intended for intermediate Spanish learners, to talk about something almost everyone knows firsthand: leaving one place, settling into another, and learning to live in more than one language. We explore migration and language through the work of five Hispanic-American authors.

We'll read excerpts from five authors; no need to read the whole book, or to have an advanced level of Spanish. The class will be in Spanish, so the course is perfect for students who want a deeper learning experience, but it's also open to native speakers. In each session we'll discuss the excerpts we read, make connections with other authors, and share our own readings and experiences. It's a space for exchanging ideas. We'll also do short writing activities to improve our written Spanish.

Session 1: Language as home and as estrangement. Una casa lejos de casa, Clara Obligado.

Session 2: Moving again and again. Primera persona, Margarita García Robayo.

Session 3: Exile and arriving in Barcelona. La insumisa, Cristina Peri Rossi.

Session 4: Migrating toward the cold. El hechizo del verano, Virginia Higa.

Session 5: Closing activity and final reflection: A final writing activity to reflect on the themes explored throughout the club, bringing together ideas of migration, belonging, language and identity.

*All reading materials will be provided by the instructor.*

About María Pousa

María Pousa is an educator and founder of María Courses, a small Spanish school based in Sant Cugat where we teach classes from a cultural perspective and organize cultural activities. She's a Philosophy graduate (UNC, Argentina) with a background in Literature (UBA, Argentina), and a certified Spanish teacher (IH). She's been teaching Spanish for over ten years.

She's interested in creating educational spaces where language isn't just analysis, but also encounter, emotion, and shared expression. She works with language as a bridge: between people, memories, and worlds.

She lives in Barcelona and coordinates workshops, clubs, and cultural experiences.
