This two-session course is for people interested in exploring how poetry engages with art and with itself. Through close readings of poems inspired by visual artworks and poems that reflect on the nature of poetry, we’ll explore how writers observe, interpret and write poems. Along the way, students will discover new poets, deepen their appreciation of the craft and develop fresh ways of looking at poetry.

Session 1: Ekphrasis

Ekphrasis is the Greek word for ‘description.’ In this sesion, we will investigate how poets enter into conversation with visual artists. Does a poet look at art differently than a casual observer, and how can we cultivate a poetic gaze? We will briefly discuss the history of Ekphrasis poetry, then examine works of art and read the poems that they inspired.

Session 2: Ars Poetica

Poets writing poems about poetry! Indulge in some poetic navel-gazing as we consider ars poetica, and discuss central questions like: What is poetry, why do we bother to write it, and who is a poem actually for? We will read from poets who have wrestled with these same queries, such as Billy Collins, Naomi Shihab Nye, Pablo Neruda, Wislawa Szymborska and others.
