Travel Writing Intensive — Place, Voice, and Story

Before your vactaion fades into a distant memory turn it into compelling travel writing. Whether you are just visiting Barcelona or are back home from distant lands, this two-session intensive focuses on the craft of travel writing: shaping scenes, finding your voice, and rendering place with honesty and depth. Across two 3-hour mornings, we’ll read closely, write in response to prompts, and share work-in-progress in a supportive group setting.

We’ll treat place as character, explore how memory and observation intersect, and practice writing that moves beyond description into story. Each session blends short craft discussions, in-class writing, and live feedback on short excerpts, so you can test ideas and revise in real time. Between sessions, those who wish can draft up to two pages to share in Session 2, where we’ll dedicate time to reading and responding to class-generated work. By the end, you’ll have new tools for structure, voice, and ethical representation, plus a clear sense of where to take your travel pieces next.

Oct. 3 — Place, Observation, and Voice

Craft focus: fresh seeing, meaningful detail, voice and perspective. In-class writing: micro-travel sketches; scene vs summary; place as character. Optional draft 2 pages for session 2.

Oct. 4 — Structure, Story, Ethics, and In-Class Reading

Craft focus: narrative arcs, memory and time, ethical representation. In-class writing: building arcs; integrating research and reflection. Live reading: optional two-page drafts shared and discussed
