Most of us sense there's a story in us somewhere. The hard part is finding it, and then turning lived experience into something that reads like a story rather than a list of things that happened. In this intensive writing class, you'll learn the core craft of memoir: how to bring plot and narrative to a true story, how to make writing come alive through scenes and details, and what to do when your memory is patchy or unreliable (which is true for almost every memoirist). Through short, focused exercises, you'll put each technique straight into practice.

As a bonus, we'll close the class with a short tarot session, using the cards as a tool for reflection rather than prediction. Their images of thresholds, losses and beginnings can be an effective way to surface the themes and stories sitting just beneath the surface. No experience or belief required. You'll leave with pages of raw material, the tools to shape it, and a fresh way in whenever you're stuck.

About Priya Joi

Priya Joi is a British-Indian journalist and author based in Barcelona, who has written for The Guardian and the BBC. Her memoir, Motherland: What I've Learnt about Parenthood, Race and Identity, was published in 2023 by Penguin Life and explores the story of parenting as a second-generation immigrant.

Priya hosts writing retreats in Marrakesh and India and works as a coach, blending the craft of storytelling with reflective practices like tarot to help people uncover the stories they've been carrying. She believes everyone's story matters, and that the most powerful ones are often those we haven't told yet.
